Job Description
The Industrial Utilities Technician works closely with all plant personnel to support improved utility system and equipment reliability as well as efficient and cost-effective use of plant resources. This position is a key member of a cross functional team that supports the improvement of asset reliability. The primary role of the Industrial Utilities Technician is to continuously improve the reliability, efficiency, and utilization of plant utility systems and equipment. This is accomplished by utilizing mechanical and electrical expertise in the operation and precise installation, maintenance, and repair of plant utility systems and equipment followed by concise and accurate documentation of all activities and observations. Job Duties: Apply industrial maintenance skills and knowledge to install, operate, maintain, and repair plant utility systems and equipment. For example, the industrial utility technician will maintain and share expert knowledge of maintenance and operation methods of plant utility equipment including ammonia refrigeration, steam generation, compressed air, and heat recovery systems. He/she will utilize training, technical expertise, and reliability methods to troubleshoot and formulate solutions to asset and process related deficiencies. The incumbent must be capable of disassembly and reassembly of equipment to repair, replace, adjust, clean, lubricate, calibrate and align equipment components. Monitor and record system performance and make adjustments to assure the safe and efficient operation of plant utility systems and equipment. For example, the industrial utility technician monitors equipment controls and operates systems such that process efficiencies are maximized while assuring uptime of all plant utilities. He/she will observe and interpret readings on gauges, meters, and charts registering various aspects of the utility systems to ensure that they are operating properly. This will include testing boiler water quality and taking necessary corrective action, such as adjusting chemical feed rates. Initiate and perform condition monitoring tasks including preventive and predictive maintenance. For example, the industrial utility technician utilizes condition monitoring technologies (such as vibration analysis, infrared thermography, oil analysis, etc.) to support the continued improvement of plant utility equipment reliability. He/she evaluates and recommends detailed instructions required to perform the condition monitoring tasks. The incumbent then summarizes the data collected and makes recommendations for equipment and process improvement based on the data collected. Troubleshoot equipment failures to ascertain possible failure modes and participate with operations, plant engineering, suppliers, and other associates to improve equipment reliability. For example, the industrial utility technician observes, tests, and evaluates equipment operation to diagnose malfunctions. He/she uses industrial maintenance expertise, analytical troubleshooting, and root cause failure analysis to recommend and implement corrective system improvements. This will include the examination of parts for defects such as breakage or excessive wear. Utilize the company’s Enterprise Asset Management System (EAMS) and supports its use as a key management information tool. For example, the industrial utility technician will initiate detailed work requests to troubleshoot, repair, and modify plant utility equipment and then document all repairs and maintenance performed. Recommend, develop, and implement system modifications to improve equipment operations and provide for attainment of plant and department goals. For example, the industrial utility technician continuously reviews each existing preventive maintenance task. He/she recommends additions, improvements, changes to the frequency of, or deletion of task instructions as needed to increase the overall effectiveness of the preventive maintenance program. This will include drafting standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other maintenance procedures. Provide direction and training for less skilled maintenance personnel and machine operators. For example, the industrial utility technician will teach and lead less trained technicians and operators in the operation, proactive maintenance, and troubleshooting of plant utility equipment.
